boy, is it strange to see actual players on my screen again. i played the gc version online mostly from around 2001-2005 before moving on to final fantasy xi with the rest of my friends, though i was on sporadically before the original servers were shut down. since then, i've only played with a few friends who never got to play online but always enjoyed grinding with me offline. it's been many years since we've done that, though.

today was my first time online in probably around 18 years and i'm still using the very first character i made. it almost brought a tear to my eye to hear those familiar tunes and see actual movement in what used to be nothing but empty corridors. i'm playing on a freshly calibrated crt and it just looks amazing, this game was always dripping with atmosphere. the music, environments, character designs, and ui, all of it calls to mind a simpler time when the future of gaming seemed so bright.

this community seems kind of small, but that's perfectly fine with me. i think this game appeals to a very specific type of person and the fact that it's still chugging along on so many platforms is truly inspiring. can't wait to jump back in with y'all and reach new heights!
